Rumors are circulating that Samsung and LG are preparing to feature smartphones with an iris-recognition feature.

The talks started in South Korea and people are saying that the two manufacturers may include iris scanners on their upcoming smartphones beginning 2016. It is likely that flagship models Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 will already feature the biometric login systems. Android Authority reported that Samsung is collaborating with SRI International to integrate the new iris-recognition technology in its mobile devices.

The first device that will feature the new technology, referred to as “Iris on the Move”, involves a customized Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 which Samsung will introduce at ISC West 2015. According to SRI International, the mobile device will offer fast, accurate and easy-to-use biometric identity management solutions to users. The technology is allegedly over 1,000 times more accurate compared to published fingerprint data. SRI added that it is looking for initial adopters of the new product for a number of security and identity management applications. There will be security apps for various activities and environments.

Who Wired reported that the LG G5 is expected to include an iris-scanning technology in the second half of 2016. LG is allegedly collaborating with IRIENCE in Korea to work on the new feature. There are local reports that IRIENCE has already finished the development of a hardware module for the eye technology and is now upgrading the algorithm process. The recognition range is supposed to be improved from 30 cm to 50 cm. The iris scanner will provide a number of advantages for LG G5 users, particularly in mobile security.

Phone Arena cited that Fujitsu also started featuring handsets with iris-scanning technology. Recently, Fujitsu released the Arrows NX F-04G, which included the “Iris Passport” that can unlock and access the device. Fujitsu claimed that they are the first in the world to present such feature. The Vivo X5 Pro, released in China in May 2015, is actually believed to have presented the feature first.

Samsung and LG have yet to confirm the availability of the new iris scanners in their upcoming flagship models. If the rumors are true, the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 can have a big advantage over other handsets in the same class. The Galaxy S7 is expected to integrate the technology with the new Samsung Pay. The new feature will most likely be tested in the South Korean market first before being introduced to the West.
