Sony has at last released its update for the Playstation Store in North America, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil after a month-long delay spurred on by several glitches found in the software's European version.

On the company's official blog, Sony writes, "Great new features like streaming trailers, improved search, new filter and sort options, as well as improved graphics, more game and video information, and easier access to add-ons are just some of the highlights."

The 26MB update exclusively applies to the Playstation 3, as no facelift is planned for Sony's handheld devices for the time being.

The Playstation Store features a suave new design and centralizes game, movie, and TV content all in one place to enhance each product's visibility. The update also introduces streaming videos on product pages and most popular charts.

To download the new Store, simply launch the Store app on the Playstation's boot screen and a prompt will appear for the update.

The Verge praises Sony's release for its "streamlined menu layout" and "more sensible approach to search," but criticizes the update's sluggish responsiveness.

"Loading the updated app for the first time seemed to take an ungodly amount of time, and Sony's heavy reliance on graphics means you could see less-than stellar performance depending on your connection speed," writes editor Chris Welch.

The new Playstation Store update arrives in the wake of the Xbox 360's fall dashboard update, which redesigned Microsoft's user-interface and added the option to pin apps or games to the home screen.
