Will Claire Underwood go head to head with her estranged husband in the presidential race?

This speculation is a natural progression in the wake of the Underwood split, which happened in Season 3 of "House of Cards."

"We used to make each other stronger," Claire told Frank. "At least I thought so, but that was a lie. We were making you stronger."

She then left her ambitious husband, effectively sparking all these "Claire Underwood for President" rumors.

Showrunner Beau Willimon has not yet confirmed this speculation, although he hinted that the upcoming season will explore a new scenario - the Underwoods no longer working together.

As such, can Frank ever do what he does without his wife?

"That's one of the big questions going into season four," Willimon told The Hollywood Reporter.

"A lot of the strength of the show is based on the strength of that marriage," he went on to say. "But as soon as we began to explore that, we realized there was no turning back."

"We also realized we'd laid the groundwork in the previous two seasons for this conflict between Francis and Claire, and the more we began exploring it, the more inevitable it became. And the more exciting it was for us to travel that emotional terrain," he explained.

However, Frank won't be utterly helpless as Doug Stamper, played by Michael Kelly, will be on hand to help him out.

It can be recalled that the president's Chief of Staff survived a blow to the head from Rachel Posner, although he carries with him "severe addiction issues" and a sort of madness, The Telegraph said.

With Doug, Frank is said to be "far more efficient," Kelly pointed out to THR.

"I can only hope that next season it'll bring more of a 'let's get some shit done,'" he added.

The question remains - will Claire run for President? Based on her capabilities, it appears she can, but not without encountering difficulties thanks to Frank's expected intervention.

This move may also mirror that of former First Lady Hillary Clinton, who is gunning for the highest position in the US government. Considering that the Netflix show's next season will coincide with the US presidential elections next year, it appears that Claire may be likely to try her hand at running for president.
