The Star Wars franchise purchase by Disney caught everyone off guard. When the news broke, it immediately started circulating on the internet and people started asking questions such as: Who will direct? What will the story relate?

Regarding the story, many fans have been clamoring for the Thrawn Trilogy which takes place after Return of the Jedi and tells the tale of Luke, Leia, and Han Solo. During this trilogy, the rebels face off against an imperial resurgence led by General Thrawn.

This is highly unlikely however as Disney stated in their takeover of the franchise that it has thousands of characters as well as thousands of places to explore in its universe making it likely that they choose to come up with a completely original story in order to not upset fanboys the same way the Prequels did. After all, if Disney were to expand the story of Luke and Leia further, it would undoubtedly upset the many fans who expected a different direction for those stories.

Another idea that has been proposed by the Huffington Post is that Disney could take the same route they have taken with the Avengers and possibly create spin-off films of individual characters that would be interconnected with the main trilogy. With such mysterious characters as Boba Fett (or any bounty hunter for that matter) or even fan favorites like Chewbacca, it could be possible that some spin-off of these characters is realized. The tactic has been successful for their Avengers films thus far both creatively and financially.

Indiewire came up with a few different options including direct sequels with the original cast, direct sequels immediately after Jedi but with the characters recast, focus on a different story after Episode 6 that has nothing to do with the original characters, go thousands of years into the future with completely new characters, or go backwards and tell the story of the universe before the six main Star Wars films.

As for the new director names are being thrown around including Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Joss Whedon (The Avengers), J.J. Abrams (Star Trek), Duncan Jones (Moon), Rian Johnson (Looper), Sam Mendes (Skyfall), Neil Blomkamp (District 9), Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), and Brad Bird (Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol). Whether any of these ends up directing it will certainly be up to debate for the next few years.
