The Android 5.0 Lollipop is finally available on the Sony Xperia Z Series.

GSM Arena reported that Sony started rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia ZR. The new update can be downloaded over-the-air (OTA), although users expect that it will also be available at Sony PC Companion in the following days. Upgrades are expected on the Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet soon.

The new update has a file size of about 700 MB and provides a number of enhancements on the Sony Xperia Z handsets as well as the Android 5.0.2 OS. Some of the things to expect with the update are the Google Material design on the user interface and other compatible apps, support for multi-user profiles and guest mode, intelligent lock screen notifications, customizable settings and the option to conveniently move apps from the internal memory to the SD card, based on the same report by GSM Arena.

GSM Arena also wrote that users will be required a minimum of 1.2 GB of storage space to download and install the Android Lollipop, but 2 GB extra is recommended for the OTA download. It is also essential to back up vital information and content before installation. Reportedly, the update is already live and available in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bolivia and Bangladesh. It has also allegedly started rolling out in other places.

Xperia Blog cited that the firmware version will be updated to 14.5.A.0.270 among Z1 series devices. The firmware version will be updated to 10.6.A.0.454 among Z series devices. The update started to be released on the Z1 series devices on May 20, 2015. It was previously live only on Telus Canada for the C6906 variant, although it is expected to seed for other Xperia Z1 variants, together with the Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact. Some people already received emails about the update 12 hours before it was rolled out.

Some of the other changes that users might observe with the update include the lock screen or notification bar not stating "no service" when there is no coverage. Users will find a Sony feature, which brings back the "close-all button" in the activity menu, allowing them to simultaneously close all apps. Xperia Blog also stated that users will find unblocked devices with server policies, the LED light being lit over all sound modes and improved messaging functionality in Ultra stamina mode.
