It's just been 8 months since Motorola unveiled the second generation Moto X. However, the smartphone has since been outperformed by other Motorola releases in the months that passed. Then there's the fact that the current Moto X model has been included in price-slash offers, which is one of those signs telling us that a successor is in the works and may be released pretty soon.

According to reports, a new Moto X is in the making and "will use the same 5.2-inch 1440 x 2560 resolution panel that is employed on the DROID Turbo," Phone Arena said.

"Under the hood, Motorola will employ the hexa-core Snapdragon 808 chipset and 4GB of RAM will be on board," the tech news portal went on to relay. "There will be two variants of the phone, one with 32GB of storage and the other with 64GB of memory."

"A 16MP Clear Pixel camera will be on the back while a 5MP snapper will handle selfies and video chats from the front. Android 5.1.1 is pre-installed," Phone Arena added.

Further, WCCF Tech speculated that the reason the device may not be installed with the newer Snapdragon 810 is that there are overheating issues associated with the said processor and that Motorola wants users to get the most juice from the upcoming flagship as possible.

"The absence of two additional Cortex-A57 processing cores will no doubt reduce performance, but you can rest assured that consumers are willing to trade-off a few high numbers in benchmarking applications for additional battery life," the site added.

The upcoming device, according to a leak, will reportedly be having a 5.2-inch AMOLED display boasting a QHD resolution, as well as 4 GB of ram and a 16 MP rear camera. The front-facing camera will be registering at 5 MP.

It's also suspected that the new Moto X (3rd generation) still won't have a microSD expansion slot but may be available in 32 GB or 64 GB models.

As previously discussed, this year's flagship may likely arrive in September, which is also the same month when the second generation Moto X was launched. Motorola chief Rick Osterloh had confirmed that the company will still keep to its annual product cycle schedule, which is also tantamount to admitting that the upcoming Moto X will indeed be released in September.

In other news, Motorola has announced that the latest Android OS update for the first gen Moto X and the second gen AT&T and Pure Edition models will be rolling out pretty soon, Android Central said.
