The Gotham Award nominations have been announced and with them are a number of surprises.

The Gotham Awards are given by the  Independent Film Project to the best independent films of the year. This year's best picture nominees include top Oscar contenders The Master and Moonrise Kingdom. The Loneliest Planet, Bernie, and Middle of Nowhere are also nominated for best picture. In the ensemble nominations category Oscar frontrunner Silver Linings Playbook is nominated alongside Your Sister Sister's, Bernie, Moonrise Kingdom, and Saftey Not Guaranteed. Sundance winner Beasts of the Southern Wild boosted its Oscar chances as it was nominated for breakthrough director for Benh Zeitlin and for Breakthrough Actor for Quvenzhane Wallis.

While winning the best picture for the Gotham does not mean a best picture nomination at the Oscars the last few years have seen a number of films (including last year's winner The Tree of Life, Beginners, The Descendants, 2010's winner Winter's Bone, Black Swan and The Kids) all been nominated for the best picture award as well as a number of other Oscar nominations. The breakthrough actor award is also a good indication of Oscar nominations as Catalina Sandino Moreno for Maria Full of Grace (2004), Melissa Leo for Frozen River (2008), Rinko Kikuchi for Babel (2006), and Amy Adams for Junebug (2005) have all won the award and then taken home an Oscar nomination.

The awards will be handed out on November 26.
