New Apple TV to Add Siri and App Store? Out in June! [Rumors]

Those waiting since January 2013 for an updated Apple TV may start getting excited now, as reports have it that the newest version of the said device may be unveiled at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), which traditionally happens in June annually.

"The new box will reportedly support third-party apps, voice control with Siri, and presumably the internet-TV service," The Verge said. Additionally, it may also have more storage and come with the Cupertino-based company's A8 mobile chip.

While some welcome the updates with anticipation, others think the improvements are "a bit underwhelming."

"In many respects, it's just redundant (any smart TV lets you download shows from the internet) or too much like other internet set-tops (from Roku to the Xbox)," Wired observed. "Even with all that new stuff, you still have to wonder if this represents much of a change."

However, new rumors of the upcoming Apple TV being able to facilitate live television streaming may put the said device on par with its smartphone and tablet in terms of popularity and revenues.

According to Wall Street Journal's sources, Apple "is in talks with programmers to offer a slimmed-down bundle of TV networks this fall."

"The service would have about 25 channels, anchored by broadcasters such as ABC, CBS and Fox and would be available on Apple devices such as the Apple TV," WSJ added. "For now, the talks don't involve NBCUniversal, owner of the NBC broadcast network and cable channels like USA and Bravo, because of a falling-out between Apple and NBCUniversal parent company Comcast Corp."

"If Apple offers enough channels-including, most notably, enough live sports-you can even ditch your cable box. That is real value. Suddenly, home automation and Siri-ness become a lot more attractive," Wired noted.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph said that Apple has not confirmed these rumors, as is its habit. However, the tech juggernaut had announced last week that it "had secured exclusive early access to the forthcoming HBO Now streaming service, allowing Apple device owners to watch popular series such as Game of Thrones."

Apple reportedly is eyeing to produce a subscription TV service that can be delivered via the Internet for years and have since held many discussions with various media outfits in relation to this goal. However, the plan did not gain as much traction, until recently, when it partnered with HBO Now.
