Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney now has a clear lead against President Barack Obama among both registered and likely voters the latest Gallup Daily tracking revealed. With the election less than three weeks away, Romney has surged in national polls after his surprisingly strong performance during the first presidential debate.

Gallup's Daily tracking reports have seen fluctuating poll numbers with an ever-increasing tilt towards the GOP candidate. Wednesday's Gallup Daily tracking found that Romney now leads Obama among registered voters, 48 percent to 46 percent. Polls last week found Obama in the clear lead, with a five-point advantage over Romney.

Romney continued to widen his lead over Obama among likely voters, the poll found. Earlier this week, the Republican candidate held a small two-point lead but on Wednesday, that margin widened by four points. Wednesday's Daily tracking revealed that Romney lead 51 percent to Obama's 45 percent among likely voters.

The results of Wednesday's poll did not reflect the results of the second presidential debate. President Obama took a much more aggressive approach in Tuesday's debate, leading several polls to proclaim he was the night's winner.

While most post-debate instant polls gave a slight lead to President Obama, poll results by SurveyUSA of California views gave the president a 24-point margin win against Romney, 56 percent to 32 percent.

The Gallup Daily tracking revealed no change in Obama's approval and disapproval ratings from the previous 24 hours. The president's approval rating remained at 49 percent, while his disapproval rating remained at 45 percent.

Romney has enjoyed an extraordinary surge in poll numbers since his performance during the Denver debate earlier this month. However, Obama's victory during Tuesday's town hall-style debate may halt and even reverse those poll changes.

The two candidates will have one last chance to appeal to voters next week before the November 6 presidential election. The final presidential debate will be held on October 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla and will focus on foreign policy.
