The controversy over Pope Francis warning of the "Mexicanization" of Argentina was just dying down when he shed more negative light on Mexico's inability to curve drug-related violence.

"I think the devil punishes Mexico with great fury," Francis said in a televised interview last week. "I believe the devil doesn't pardon Mexico. The Pope went on to say blame doesn't land on an individual person or group's shoulder, but that it is everyone's responsibility to fight narco-trafficking.

Three weeks ago, one of Francis' private emails was made public. In it, the pontiff relates Argentina's growing drug problem to Mexico's, using the term "Mexicanization," which angered Mexican government officials to the point that they issued a grievance with the Vatican.

Francis' "devil" comments only reignited those emotions and drew mixed reaction on Twitter. Some understanding of the Pope's comments, others suprised he would again disappoint Mexicans.

As he usually does, Francis hasn’t used Twitter to cover either the devil or “Mexicanization” comments. Instead, the Pope on March 14 asked followers to commemorate lent by “listening to the word of God and celebrating the sacraments.

Part two of Francis’ interview with Mexican television network “Televisa” airs next week.
