Nintendo promised the highest graphic qualities on their upcoming Wii U console. Recent news that the New Super Mario Bros. U will to be projected in 1080p has drawn criticism to the company.

The official website for the game used to say, "Experience Mario like never before... in full 1080p HD, only on the Wii U console!" But it changed without any explanation and the new tag line says "Experience Mario like never before... in high definition, only on the Wii U console!"

According to TG Daily most Wii U games will project 720p HD graphics for its launch titles. In a world where 1080p dominates, many feel that this is unacceptable and many have taken to twitter to express their discontent.

@Xelviar-"Disappointed at a few Wii U things though, like the PS3 it's native resolution is at 720p, though both TV and gamepad support 1080p."

@i_a_n_n_i_c_k- (Translated from French) "The Wii U has the same marketing tactics as the PS3 and the same failures six years later."

@Acadian_Birder- "Games at 720p and no blue-ray? WHY the heck would I want a #wii U #Nintendo? Tell me. #justanotherlametoy #GameConsole."

@MasaVandal (Translated from Spanish) "Now that we know that the Wii U Mario is 720p, Ocarina of Time should take away that 1080p next to its avatar."

@Pelaez_1 (Translated from Spanish) "Didn't they say that New Super Mario Bros was going to run on 1080 p and now its better on 720p hahah"

@Dark_Magician99- "Are people really gonna [expletive] about a change in screen resolution a video game? Super Mario Bors. U isn't going to be 1080p, its 720p."

@billpzc- "New Super Mario Bros. U looks Great and it looked like it was running at 1080p even though I think that one is capped at 720p."

@XMelkor (Translated from Spanish) "So Nintendo won't decide if their new game will be seen on 720p or 1080p. Every day they say something different."

A few other Twitter comments indicate that the game will eventually make it to 1080po, but there has been no confirmation on that which adds to the confusion of the situation.

@skyluigi2 "So yes. There's currently talk of New Super Mario Bros. U being 1080p (Full HD) Personally I think it'll probably be 720p.

@_Pixeleados_(Translated from Spanish) "New Super Mario Bros. U will eventually reach 1080p, on Wii U. The game was only running 720p up to now."

@GamereactorES (Translated from Spanish) "New Super Mario Bors. U runs (and jumps) at 1080p not in 720p. "

The Playstation 3's native resolution is also in 720p, but it can project games at 1080p as well. The Wii is just as capable of this and while the initial reaction seems a bit negative from some, it is essential to remember that the Wii U is still in its infancy and that launch titles are never great indicators of the potential of the system. Initial PS 3 titles also launched at 720p and many later titles appeared in the upgraded resolution. Critics will point to the fact that the PS3 was released in 2006 and that the Wii U should have made up for that six years later, but graphics have never been Nintendo's main focus.

Their last console the Wii outsold the rest of the market with standard definition graphics and innovative motion control gameplay. The Wii U is capable of the 1080p HD graphics and has new gameplay options to offer with its gamepad.

If Nintendo is still making games in 720p two or three years down the line, then the initial criticism might be warranted, but for now, Nintendo should get the benefit of the doubt to prove that their gameplay is as innovative as ever.
