Gearbox Software has officially announced Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty, the first installment in a series of four DLC packs due out through the next few months.

Captain Scarlett will take place in a bandit town known as Oasis and introduce a new currency called seraph crystals. A new hovering sand skiff vehicle will make its debut alongside new enemies, such as the sand worm. The Associated Press assures gamers who have yet to scratch the surface of Pandora's on-disc offerings that "the new campaign was designed with all players in mind --from those who haven't finished the game to the elite who are replaying it again to discover more swag."

Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, describes the atmosphere of Captain Scartlet: "You can sense the pirate theme across the landscape, even though there's no water. It's all dried up. It feels more like Tatooine than an ocean. These bandits really have embraced the pirate lifestyle, and there's the legend of treasure. That kicks off this whole adventure that the players can go on."

While this is the first sizable DLC to reach the shores of Pandora in Borderlands 2, Gearbox launched a new character class known as the Mechromancer on Wednesday. The Mechromancer is free to those who pre-ordered the game, but costs 800 Microsoft Points ($9.99) to those who purchased it post-launch.

Similarly, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty  is priced at 800 Microsoft Points ($9.99). However, players can opt for the $29.99 season pass option which entitles consumers to each of the four DLC packs scheduled to roll  out in the coming months.

The add-on campaign is the first of four that Gearbox Software plans to release over the coming months. Each campaign will cost $9.99 each or $29.99 for a season pass that includes all four levels.

The DLC officially launches on October 16.
