The premiere of "Fifth Shades of Grey" is only days away, but while the film has yet to begin showing on cinemas, reports are appearing on how the movie will end, and it may surprise fans, Hollywood Life reported.
It has been reported before that there were disputes over the ending of the film between Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and authoress E.L. James (real name Erika Leonard) who wrote the novels the film is based on. Most of their debate was reportedly over the very last word of the film, and the significance behind it.
Apparently, Taylor-Johnson wanted the final word of the film to be "red," which is the safeword of Anastasia Steele and her lover Christian Grey, played by Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, respectively, according to Hollywood Reporter. It was based on the rewritten script by Patrick Marber.
The final decision however, came from James, who was given a lot of creative control by Universal Pictures. Due to her demands, the final word of the film has been changed to "stop," again by Anastasia to Christian, as based on the original script by Kelly Marcel.
An insider even called it a "bummer," as most involved in the film preferred Marber's ending. They shared, "It ended on a really smart note and Erika wouldn't allow it."
In fact, James allegedly threatened to boycott the film and withdraw her support if they did not follow her desired ending, according to The Guardian.
Another insider who spoke to Hollywood Reporter added that, "You can't just put the book on the screen," referring to the difference between setting the tone on film from the books. However, reports say James exercised a lot of control and influence over the film and reportedly "used every opportunity to flex that power."
The source called the ending "the most petty and ridiculous argument in the world," and shared that James' control resulted in a lot of conflict between the director and herself.
Taylor-Johnson has even spoken up before over how difficult it was to work with James. During a previous interview, she stated, "It was difficult I'm not going to lie."
"We definitely fought, but they were creative fights, and we would resolve them," she said. "But it was about finding a way between the two of us, satisfying her vision of what she'd written as well as my need to visualize this person onscreen."
"But, you know, we got there," she concluded.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" will hit theaters on Feb 11, 2015. While they wait, fans and interested moviegoers can check out the official trailer released last year and the recent Super Bowl trailer released earlier this month.
