According to the Pew Research Center, six out of every ten Hispanics believe they can speak and read English, either newspapers or books, "very well" or "pretty well".

The report also states that 92 percent of U.S.-born Hispanics consider themselves proficient in speaking English compared to only 38 percent of non-U.S. Hispanics that say they can carry out a good conversation in the same language.

The percentage increases among third-generation Hispanics with some 96 percent claiming they are proficient in spoken  English.

However the story changes in Spanish proficiency.

Spanish is spoken less among the younger Hispanic generation.

The same research center reported that only 47 percent of third generation Hispanics say they can either speak or read Spanish "very well" or "pretty well"--a huge decrease compared to second generation Hispanics with some 82 percent saying they are Spanish-proficient.

If the rate was to remain constant, then Spanish proficiency would cease to exist among the latter Hispanic generations by the 5th or 6th generation.
