This season of "The Walking Dead" has given us a number of shocking scares. One of them was the death of Beth, who USA Today said "helmed the best episode of the show so far and was quickly becoming one of our favorite characters."

And now, speculations are rife about the next surprising development to emerge in the hit series, particularly about the new villain, as the cannibals at Terminus have fallen.

"Despite the rumors that Negan, the leader of the Saviors, would become the new antagonist for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and the rest of the survivors, new theories are pointing towards 'The Whisperers' as the next big bad," the International Business Times said.

"The Whisperers," for the unfamiliar, is a group of humans "who wear the skin of walkers on their face in order to blend in." They were first featured in the comic's 130th issue of the 22nd volume called "A New Beginning."

If you haven't gone through the comic on which the series is based yet, you'll probably wonder why "The Whisperers" should be a nemesis to be reckoned with.

"There's nothing wrong with recycling zombie skin to help you survive, but 'The Whisperers' aren't just trying to hide - they're a mysterious, territorial cult that stalks and kills survivors," Inquisitr explained.

The site also went on to say that it's possible that this scary group of people will be introduced to the public before Negan, as Robert Kirkman, the comic book series' creator, had said that it may be a while before the baddest villain of the saga will emerge.

"We actually talk about that a bit in the writer's room as to when it would be appropriate to bring him in and what needs to happen in order to get to that point. Unless the show gets canceled abruptly very soon, you'll see Negan on the TV show. Like Season 9," Inquisitr quoted him as saying.

If the show manages to continue drawing viewers, it's highly likely there'll be a Season 9.

Scott M. Gimple, the showrunner, had also seemed to hint of the presence of "The Whisperers" in Season 5 in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"In the next half-season, this group is going to be grounded to the earth emotionally, substantially but not literally (laughs). They're going to find themselves in wildly different set of circumstances. They are going to go through it emotionally and it's going to get harder for them before it becomes weirder for them," he revealed.

When asked to elaborate what he meant by "weirder," he appeared to sidestep giving more details. Could "weirder" mean "The Whisperers"?

Let us know what you think.
