After the trailer for "Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens," fans of the franchise were surprised that they did not see one familiar character from the previous installments. New revelations from producers provided new light on the characters that will appear.

J.J. Abrams (director and co-writer of the upcoming Star Wars film) and Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm president) exclusively shared to Entertainment Weekly the identities of some of the characters in the trailer. Fans were delighted with the nostalgic manner that the producers shared the new personalities. They put out a set of Topps collectible cards presenting characters and environments from different parts of the original Star Wars movie, complete with the old Star Wars logo and card number on the lower left part of each card.

The same approach was used to promote the 1977 Star Wars movie, consisting of five sets of Topps cards with the tagline "Collect 'Em, Trade 'Em." The cards were bordered by either red or blue. So far, five blue cards and three red cards have been featured.

In the same EW report, Abrams said, "I'm only sorry we couldn't give everyone a stick of gum."

IGN reported that the soccer ball/droid is called BB-8, which is card #11. The pilot in the X-Wing is Poe Dameron, to be played by Oscar Isaac, on card #53. The hooded figure that drew the red crossguard lightsaber in the forest is Kylo Ren, card #67. Daisy Ridley riding a Speeder is Rey, on card #74. The helmetless Stormtrooper played by John Boyega in the middle of the desert sands is Finn on the run, card #76. The scene showing Stormtroopers getting ready for battle is card #81. The X-Wings in formation is card #88 and the modified Millennium Falcon appears on card #96.

Cinema Blend reported that the trading cards also have captions at the bottom to give some details about the character or their situation. For example, IGN reported that the Kylo Ren trading card states, "Kylo Ren ignites his lightsaber". The cards also helped distinguish the gender of the characters by using "his" or "her".

Fans are looking forward to the subsequent card releases and appearance of other slated Star Wars actors who have not been shown in the first trailer, namely Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Warwick Davis and Kenny Baker.

"Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens" is set to release in theaters on December 18, 2015.
