As the hit BBC series "Sherlock" prepares to premiere its fourth season, its co-creator warned fans to brace themselves for tragedy, which is likely to happen to one of the show's character, the International Business Times reported.

As the season four of the series nears, many have been sharing their own conclusions about how the story will develop and if it will follow Sherlock's adventure in the book, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

But during an interview with the Radio Times, showrunner Mark Gatiss gave an insight about the possible future of the show, saying, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that's just how it goes."

Additionally, Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. Watson in the show, said if it will be based on the book, his theory is that the tragedy will befall Mary Watson, played by his real life partner Amanda Abbington.

"While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did... So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies - so at some point presumably she'll die," Freeman said, according to Fandom.

However, when Gatniss was asked about Freeman's comment, he kept his lips sealed and said that the series did not exactly follow the storyline written in the book.

"There's an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do,  there are lots of surprises to come," Gatniss said.

The season 4 of the show is expected to begin filming early 2015 and will premiere early 2016.

However, according to Cultbox, the series will have a one 90-minute episode, which is a Christmas special, and is scheduled to be shown on Christmas of 2015.

Gatniss described the episode as a "very special special," adding that the cast and showrunners are excited about it.
