Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton stars as Greek goddess Athena in the new advertisement for video game "Game of War: Fire Age." Her appearance, however, garnered mixed reactions from gamers who refuse to believe that the model played the game, International Business Times reported.

In the video, the 22-year-old model could be seen in a white gown, gold cordings for a belt and matching gold accessories and walking through a battlefield where soldiers are engaged in battle against a fire-breathing dragon.

Upton tweeted about her partnership with the game, saying, "So excited! I've waited so long to be in a game! Check me out!"

Reactions from social media

One user tweeted, "Video Gaming Babe: Athena (Game Of War: Fire Age). Beautifully Acted Out by enchanting," while another user tweeted, "so that was her pushing iphone games. Interesting." Other tweets even said that Upton "must be hurting for dough."

Nick Tylwalk also wrote a post on App Trigger, titled "Does Anyone Think Kate Upton Has Actually Played Game Of War: Fire Age?"

"We know that athletes like Clash of Clans, and I buy it when celebs pop up endorsing World of Warcraft on TV, but something makes me think that Upton has never tried the game she's asking us to 'come and play with me'," Tylwalk wrote. "Ms. Upton, if you're reading and want to reach out and tell me I'm wrong, I'd be okay with that."

Sources claimed that the game's parent company, Machine Zone, reportedly spent approximately $40 million in marketing, according to Ad Week.

"It is fantastic to be instrumental in the start of a new era in gaming and communications," Upton wrote in an email to Ad Week. "I love playing the part of Athena-she's such a bad-ass character, commanding armies, slaying hydra, charging into battle-the work shows how much fun it is, and I am proud to be part of it."

Eric Cosper, Untitled Worldwide Executive Creative Director (the agency in charge of the campaign), also sent an email to Ad Week, and wrote, "In the production of the spots we really wanted to dial up the contrast between a dirty, gritty, medieval world and the sweet, inviting Athena. She looks out of place but is very much a part of everything that is going on."

Upton was recently seen in costume as Athena during a promotional event for the game held in Busan, South Korea on Saturday, according to Daily Mail.

"Game of War: Fire Age" is available for free at the Apple Store and Google Play Store.
