The Google Play Edition of HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 smartphones will receive the updates to the Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating system this coming Friday, November 21.

Although the HTC handsets will be one of the firsts in the industry to receive the Lollipop update, the actual release date of the patch is already delayed by a couple of days. The update was originally set for release early in the week or around November 17, reports Slash Gear.

While there is no detail yet on what the Lollipop update will bring, the HTC One smartphones will be "the first in the industry to have more than just the basic Google-made Vanilla layout," cites the report.

Mo Versi, Vice President of Product Management of HTC, confirmed the Friday release through Twitter when he responded to a query asking whether the update to the HTC handsets is on target.

Versi tweeted: "Hi Marty. Got delayed. New target is Friday. Working aggressively to get it out as quickly as possible. Thanks. Mo."

Indicative of how HTC One users have been waiting for the update, one of Mo's followers on Twitter even commented on his tweet and said: "No worries Mo. More important to get it right than fast. But fast is good too."

HTC was one of the first companies to officially announce that it would release an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop to its current smartphones, notes Tech Times.

"The company (promised then) that it would roll out the Lollipop to its current flagship handset HTC One M8 and its predecessor HTC One M7 within 90 days (after) Google releases its latest Android mobile operating system," cites the report.

Come November 21, HTC will deliver on its promise.

But the update shall not cover the entire HTC One smartphone family. The patch is only applicable to the Google Play Edition of HTC One M8 and HTC One M7, clarifies Slash Gear.

"These devices can be updated faster than the standard HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 because they run a stock version of Android. And there's no need to test HTC's Sense skin it runs on top of these devices, which are designed to add extra features and make Android more user friendly," details the Tech Times.

Tech Times also stated that owners of the standard HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 handsets are expected to receive an over-the-air (OTA) update that will bring the sweet taste and features of Android 5.0 Lollipop in December 2014 or January 2015.
