The 2014 Rogers Cup did not turn out so well for the victory veterans, Roger Federer and Venus Williams, after they were beaten by relatively newcomers to the title.

After what several reporters dubbed as a really bad day for Federer, the world's number 3, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, breezed past his opponent through two straight sets to be crowned champion of the league. This is his first time to win the Rogers Cup and, based on his performance to the top, it likely won't be his last.

"I knew I was able to play great tennis, but maybe not like this, this week," he said before getting his $598,000 prize money and trophy at the Rexall Centre, writes the Toronto Sun. Indeed, the week transformed from great to spectacular for the new champ, whose consistent performance also allowed him to bag his second title at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Canada. "You know, I think for the moment, you know, I don't realize really I achieved this week, but it's a big achievement for me. I played well all this week. I beat many goods. It's a big achievement," he added.

In an article by BBC, Federer reportedly acknowledged the win, saying that Tsonga "deserved this title," after "beating some amazing players on the way."

In the women's division, world number 5, Agnieszka Radwanska, took over Venus Williams to win her first title of the season, writes The Guardian. With a score of 6-4, 6-2, the Polish player proceeded to claim her championship title in a little over 80 minutes. While the 25-year-old lorded over Venus with her ranking, against the latter's 26th, Venus had also just gone from a win against her sister Serena in the semifinals, which speculators say may have turned her emotional during the latest match.

In another article by The Guardian, Serena admitted that her loss to Venus was "a lesson", reflecting a score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 in their 25th professional clash in their careers. "Big sister taught little sister a lesson. I made many mistakes today. When I make so many mistakes, it is impossible to win against her," said Serena.
