Day 12 of the U.S. Open will put four top-seeded female players head to head in the quest of reaching the finals match for the Grand Slam title.
Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, is scheduled to play against Russian superstar Maria Sharapova at Arthur Ashe Stadium Friday afternoon for the first semifinal match of the day.
Azarenka, who quietly reached the top ranking position, holds a 5-4 advantage in the tournament, Bleacher Report said, including a 2-1 advantage against Sharapova. No. 3-ranked Sharapova, who defeated Marion Bartoli, from France, in a three set quarterfinal match, will not make this match easy for Azarenka.
American Serena Williams and Italian Sara Errani will square off later in the afternoon for the second, and final, semifinals match on Friday. No. 4-ranked Williams, is seen as the favorite for the match, according to Bleacher Report, but No. 10-ranked Errani should not be discounted. Errani has had a positive run this year, defeating No. 6-ranked Angelique Kerber and doubles partner No. 20-ranked Roberta Vinci.
The winners for both matches will play against each other in the women's singles match on Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 7 p.m. EST.
On the men's side, No. 4-ranked David Ferrer and No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic defeated Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Martin Del Potro respectively to advance to the semifinals. Spaniard Ferrer took five sets to defeat Serbian Tipsarevic in their quarterfinals match. Serbian Djokovic, however, took just three sets 6-2, 7-6(3) and 6-4 to beat Argentine Del Potro.
Djokovic and Ferrer will face off on Saturday during their semifinals match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Also playing on Saturday are No. 6-ranked Czech Tomas Berdych vs. No. 3-ranked Scotsman Andy Murray, who will battle it out to reach the men's singles final.
The U.S. Open, which began on August 27, is scheduled to end September 9.
