The fifth season of "The Vampire Diaries" had capped with the death of Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), which has upset Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Christian Today postulates that although the season premiere has not showed whether Damon had actually died, the episode suggested that Elena's "toxic" lover has left and will not be coming back, at least in Elena's arms.

There have been rumors that the writers have plans for Elena to die in the show as she would allegedly do anything to get her "toxic" lover back. Elena, who had since succumbed to be a vampire in the show, will reportedly die to turn into a human again and get her true love back.

The Guardian Liberty Voice, on the other hand, observed that whatever the writers have cooked up for the vampire series in Season 6, it would definitely have Elena going to the extremes, even risking death, in order to save Damon.

Meanwhile, Dobrev has been remarkably quiet about the development of her character in the upcoming season, and opted to show facets of her real life outside the show. The International Business Times said that on July 9, the 25-year-old brunette had teased fans about finding a French lover in Paris, which led the show viewers to think that it might have been the beauty's spoiler to the show's season 6. However, Dobrev's photo on Instagram showed an adorable cat, much to her fans' dismay who are eager to know whether their favorite heroine would die in the series.

Director Jeffrey Hunt had tweeted on Thursday that the Season 6 premiere will nonetheless have fans' hearts going through a very tough ride. He said, "#TVD fans episode 601 is going to take you on a emotional roller coaster you may not be ready for. suggest you start preparing now." Moreover, Wetpaint said that the latest season has been suggested to be an entire installment devoted to the heroes' journey back to each other's arms, no doubt alluding to Elena and Damon's time apart from each other due to the older vampire's death.

The CW's vampire series is expected to debut on Thursday nights beginning October 2 at 8PM. IBTimes said Dobrev, who has been in Paris for Fashion Week and had a vacation in Bali, is expected to return along the rest of the cast to the Atlanta set soon to get back in character and film the latest season episodes.
