Back in March, a report noted by Phone Arena said that the LG G3 "is going to be waterproof and dustproof."

"This seems to be the new trend for top-shelf Android models which was started with the dunking of the Sony Xperia Z during the 2013 CES show in Las Vegas," the site added. And it would appear that such is the case with the next batch of phones, including LG G3, which also has its own water-dunking video (more on that later).

Then, in May, gadget buffs and industry observers got confirmation of this speculation when the LG G3 was announced by the South Korean tech firm. It appeared that LG actually didn't went out and make a waterproof LG G3.

"Basically we think that waterproofing on smartphones is not that useful," LG's Mobile Communications Design Lab VP Chul Bae Lee told Trusted Reviews. "It is a matter of strategy choice. Instead of waterproofing we have put a much better screen and a much better camera [in the G3]."

"The reason for us not doing waterproofing on the G3 is not because we don't have the technology but because of our strategy choice - it's just not that useful," he added. "We are launching phones in Japan that are waterproof so we do have the technology.

It won't be surprising to hear some protest to his statement about waterproofing being "not that useful," especially among those with active lifestyles.

However, despite this declaration, it appears that the LG G3 can indeed survive a "prolonged water test," as proven by a video posted on YouTube, BGR noted.

"The phone has been placed under water for two hours, with the display turned on the entire time," the site said. "Once the test was completed, the handset owner removed the back cover and battery, placing the device in a bowl of rice to absorb any excess water."

However, the said video doesn't really prove enough that the device is truly waterproof, although it managed to show that the G3 "can survive minor water accidents," which is good news to the accident-prone.

Going back to LG's focus on installing "a much better screen and a much better camera," it would appear that the company has succeeded on these points, if TechRadar's review is to be relied on. The tech news source judged the smartphone as having "great screen" and a "good camera in bright light."

The LG G3 may be available via AT&T starting July 11, Friday. Will you be getting one for yourself?
