Talk has it that the Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone is coming this fall, specifically August, if Trusted Reviews is to be believed. If this is the case, then the newest addition to the tech company's flagship device line up comes just within months after the last release, which happened just in February at the MWC 2014.
"Such a launch would make it the flagship smartphone for the latter half of 2014, but it certainly seems a little too soon for a flagship refresh," the site observed.
All talks of Z3 release dates aside, rumor has it that the said device will have "bezels that are significantly slimmer than the previous Xperia Z2," according to Gospel Herald. This must be Sony's way of responding to user issues regarding the large bezels above and below the Xperia Z2's display.
"Other rumored aesthetic changes include a much large 5.3-inch QHD screen with a 2550 x 1440 display," GH continued.
"Regarding performance, there is no general consensus about the Xperia Z3's specs," the news source added. "Perhaps the greatest area of contention is whether or not the Sony Xperia Z3 will come with the vaunted Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor."
Right now, this speculation remains unanswered. However, what observers seem to agree on is that the upcoming version will be equipped with Android 4.4 KitKat OS. "At this time, the current Android version is the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update that just recently started rolling out across various mobile device manufacturers and wireless service providers," GH pointed out.
Aside from the screen size and width, it has also been rumored that the Z3 may "pack the same 20.7-megapixel rear camera as both its predecessors," Trusted Reviews noted. Also, the metal frame of the Z3 may probably be covered with a PVD coating, making it stronger, more resistant to corrosion, and more scratch-proof than both the Z1 and Z2. Plus, it could also make the phone's body quite more environment-friendly - a fact that may make green advocates crack a smile.
Considering all these things, it looks like Sony is just releasing a "new and improved" version of the Z2, rather than a groundbreaking, innovative device that is a step above its predecessor. While we're on the subject, some may be wondering when Sony will deliver something that's not an upgrade of previously launched devices, if it were to compete with Samsung, Microsoft, and Apple shoulder-to-shoulder.
Since the company has a habit of releasing major devices every 6 months or so, it's probable that a truly new model will be unveiled only after a year or so.
