Despite being ranked world No. 2, Novak Djokovic has taken the top seed at Wimbledon 2014, while world No.1 player Rafael Nadal and defending champion Andy Murray have been seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively. Roger Federer, who won seven Wimbledon titles, is seeded 4th.
Wimbledon uses the grasscourt weighting system in determining the seeds and does not follow the ATP world rankings. According to Sportskeeda, the seeding calculation follows a certain formula: "Total ATP points accumulated by a player till 16th of June (i.e., the Monday before the start of the tournament) + Total grasscourt points accumulated by a player in the preceding year + 75% of grasscourt points in the grasscourt event where a player has achieved his best result in 2012 (i.e., the year before the previous one)."
The grass court weighting system takes into account the performance of each player on grass, which explains why the Serbian was put ahead of the Spaniard despite Nadal's recent wins. Although Nadal bagged the French Open, he has not been doing very well at Wimbledon in the past few years. Djokovic won the Wimbledon in 2011 and in the past four years, has advanced to the semifinals every time. Djokovic is Top 2 according to ATP rankings. Nadal lost in the second round of the Wimbledon in 2012 against Lukas Rosol and lost in the first round in 2013 against No. 135 Steve Darcis.
Nadal was moved to second place after losing during the first round in the 2013 tournament and losing in the second round in 2012.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Djokovic was the 2011 champion and was a runner-up in 2013. Nadal is the French Open Champion as well as the winner in the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon. Andy Murray is the Wimbledon defending champion and ranks No. 5 worldwide.
Stan Wawrinka, the Australian Open champion, is seeded fifth but ranks No. 3 worldwide. Wawrinka said in a report by The National, "Wimbledon, they do what they want. For me it's fine. I knew that with my past two years on grass I didn't have any results, so for sure my ranking will drop a little bit for the seedings." He added, "At the end of the day, it doesn't change much. You have to play well. You have to start the tournament well if you want to go far, and that's simple."
Meanwhile, according to Fox Sports, the seedings in the women follow world rankings. In the women's division, Serena Williams is the top seed. Li Na from China is second seed. Simona Halep of Romania and Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland took third and fourth place respectively. Maria Sharapova may have won the French Open but in this list she is number five. A new Wimbledon champion in the women's division is certain after Marion Bartoli, the 2013 champion, retired from tennis after she won a Grand Slam.
