David Villa, striker of Atletico Madrid, will leave the team and transfer to New York City FC because of a great offer. Villa was part of the 23-man Spanish roster bound for Brazil to battle in the World Cup 2014.
According to Mail Online, the 32-year-old said, "It is an irresistible project for me and my family, it is very, very good. It is about football and I have to accept it. I will be a fan of Atletico all my life for what they have given me this year." Villa added, "It has been a great project for me both personally as well as sporting and now I face a new challenge which is what I have always looked to do in my career and my life. I would like to thank the people at Atletico and those that tried to convince me to stay, like Cholo (coach Diego Simone) and the rest of the coaching staff."
Atletico Madrid was doing well in the Champions League for the first time in decades, but Real Madrid took home the overall title in Lisbon. He scored 13 goals for the club in the last season.
Manchester Evening News writes that Villa already took a medical assessment prior to his transfer. He was seen going to Bridgewater Hospital in Moss Side. The official kick off of the new MLS season will be in March 2015. NYC FC signing Villa is a sign that the club is becoming more serious and aims to be very competitive in the upcoming season.
Manchester City chairman said, "Very soon you will be hearing about our first signing for our club in New York and it will be a very pleasant surprise I hope for our fans. This is a very exciting project we have embarked on. We have a wonderful team of individuals over there that is being set up, led by Tim [Pernetti], our CEO. We have a great coach in Jason [Kreis]."
