As No. 4-ranked Serena Williams and No. 1-ranked Roger Federer prepared for their evening quarterfinal matches, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick powered through their afternoon singles matches against Marin Cilic and Juan Martin Del Potro.

Murray and Roddick followed matches that saw No. 3-ranked Maria Sharapova and No. 10-ranked Sara Errani move into the semifinals as well as No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic into the quarterfinals.

Sharapova defeated No. 11-ranked Marion Bartoli from France in three sets 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4. The Russian tennis star took advantage of the rain delay on Tuesday to rethink her game plan and eventually advanced to the semifinals. The New York Times reported that Sharapova will face No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka for the semifinals on Friday.

Italian Errani defeated doubles partner Roberta Vinci in a two set, 6-2 and 6-4, match at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Errani will face the winner of Wednesday night's match between Serena Williams and No. 12 Ana Ivanovic, the New York Times reported.

No. 2-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic was victorious in his match against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, winning in the first two sets before Wawrinka retired mid-game in the third set. The win allows the top seeded player to advance to the quarter finals.

Just two hours shy of the evening matches, Murray and Roddick played intense games against Cilic and Del Potro. Playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Del Potro and Roddick played head to head, with scores 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 in their first three sets. Del Potro powered Roddick in the final set, defeating the No. 20-ranked player in his final professional match. Over at Louis Armstrong Stadium, No. 3-seeded Murray battled No. 12 Cilic during a quarterfinal match.
