Day nine of the U.S. Open was filled with few victories and many postponed games. Rain showers on Tuesday forced tournament officials to suspend eight matches and cancel two others.

Two major matches that managed to finish on Tuesday included No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka and No. 4-ranked David Ferrer.

Azarenka, from Belarus, defeated defending U.S. Open champion No. 7-ranked Samantha Stosur during their quarterfinals match in three sets 6-1, 4-6 and 7-6(5). The Belarusian player will go on to play the victor of the Maria Sharapova vs. Marion Bartoli match, reported the New York Times.

Spaniard David Ferrer was also able to dismiss the rain to reach the men's quarterfinals match. Ferrer defeated Frenchmen Richard Gasquet in three sets 7-5, 7-6(2) and 6-4.  "In the big moments, I'm doing what I need to do," Ferrer told the New York Times. "I'm very strong mentally."

Three major matches that were disrupted by the rain and were subsequently suspended on Tuesday will resume on Wednesday at 11 a.m. EST.

No. 3-ranked Maria Sharapova's match against Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli was suspended after one set 0-4. The postponed game will resume on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 11 a.m. EST.

On the men's side, the match between Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro and American Andy Roddick was also suspended after one set. The postponed game will resume on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic's match against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka was suspended after one set and will resume on Wednesday at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Due to Tuesday's postponed games, Wednesday will be headlined by most top-seeded players. No. 3-ranked Andy Murray, No. 4-ranked Serena Williams, No. 1-ranked Roger Federer and No. 10-ranked Sara Errani will all play their quarterfinal matches on Wednesday.

As of 9 a.m. EST on Wednesday, the U.S. Open stated that it intended to continue Wednesday matches as planned but that it would monitor the weather throughout the day. Spectators can sign up for weather alerts from the U.S. Open here.
