On Tuesday, April 22, the world celebrates Earth Day, and to make this date even more special, NASA has launched a "global selfie" campaign for all humanity to participate in.

Through its website, the space agency has made a call for everyone who wants to participate in this project which has the objective of creating a mosaic with the planet's shape.

The way you can be a part of this special event is very simple: you just have to take a selfie in a background which shows this planet's nature, such as forests, lakes, rivers, mountains and writing about the place where you took the selfie.

"Go out and show us mountains, parks, the sky, rivers, lakes -wherever you are, that will be your selfie," reads NASA's website.

Millions of people from around the world have joined this gigantic project with the hashtag #GlobalSelfie through social networks like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Flickr.

Earth Day was celebrated for the first time in 1970 and was established by Gaylord Nelson, an American Senator who started the celebration as a environmental seminar which would take place every April 22, according to The International Business Times.

On 2014, for the 44th Earth Day, NASA is preparing what is expecting to be the largest selfie in the world.

"While NASA satellites constantly scan the Earth from space, on Earth Day we ask you to go out and take photos of yourselves wherever you are on Earth," wrote the Agency, quoted by Los Angeles Times.

Join the celebration and send your selfie to NASA's website.
