Speculations about the iPhone 6 arose almost immediately after the 5C and 5S was released last year. Judging by the way rumor after rumor about Apple's next iteration of its smartphone keeps popping up, it appears that the only time when all talk and conjectures about the next model will stop is when the actual device finally falls into the hands of avid iPhone fans.

And now, a recent report appears to push things closer to the finish line.

"Apple Inc suppliers will begin mass producing displays as early as May for the next iPhone, expected to be launched this autumn, with a 4.7-inch screen likely to be produced first while a 5.5-inch version could be delayed, supply chain sources said," Reuters reported.

"Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd have all been tapped to make the screens, said the sources, who asked not to be identified."

Apple and its suppliers have declined to comment on the matter.

Mashable said that the delay in the production of the 5.5-inch screen version "is reportedly due to complications related to problems with in-cell production technology, which may result in a shift to film-sensor technology rather than in-cell technology for the larger screen." Reuters stated that the manufacture of the bigger screen will start a couple of months later.

Apple has been under "increasing pressure" to innovate the gadget industry, as what the company has done in the past during Steve Jobs' tenure. However, Reuters noted, current CEO Tim Cook has so far "played his cards close to his chest" by forecasting new product categories for this year.

Due to anxiety about the smartphone market's saturation and the question of whether the Cupertino, CA-based company can still stay ahead in the tech game, Apple's shares have dropped below $600 since November 2012, which is a little over a year since its maverick founder's death.

Will Apple remain at the top of its game by the end of the year? Let us know what you think!
