David Moyes' time with Manchester United may be drawing to an end. Many have been wondering when the team's executives would make the decision, but it might not even be their choice. According to reports, the coach is facing a mutiny from his own players.
According to ESPN, "David Moyes is facing a mutiny among his Manchester United squad with the players increasingly at odds with their manager over his tactics and training methods."
The report notes that the team is upset by Moyes' training sessions which focus mainly on shape and organization rather than the ball-related training they did under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The news is not particularly surprising considering the team's play of late. The team is coming off an embarrassing 3-0 loss against Manchester City at home. The team conceded a goal in the first minute of the game and wound up losing both derby matches by the combined score of 7-1.
"If we only consider this season, there is just one club in Manchester and it's ours but you cannot forget what United has done in the previous years."
Those words were uttered by Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini in February and they ring truer than ever.
But that is not the only reason for embarrassment. The team recently lost 3-0 at home against hated rival Liverpool. Again the side looked completely overwhelmed by the speed of Brendan Rodgers' side.
Moyes' side is in the Champions League quarterfinals, but that dream of making a deeper run is likely to come to an end as soon as next week when the team takes on Bayern Munich in the first leg. Munich is widely considered the favorite to win the tournament and is likely to make easy work of Moyes' side.
With only 51 points this season, Moyes' club is unlikely to play in the Champions League next season unless it wins the tournament. Fourth place Arsenal has 63 points and would have to compete in a playoff to play in the group stage next season. Third place Manchester City has 66 points and can finish as high as first place.
United cannot even hope to compete in the Europa League next season. Tottenham Hotspur has 56 points in 31 games while fifth place Everton has 57 points in 30 games. A win by Everton in its next match would likely put the team nine points ahead of United with only seven games left to play.
As it stands, Moyes' first season, possibly his last, could wind up being a major dark spot in Manchester United's illustrious history. The team is not only failing at winning, but Moyes' major pickups have also faltered all year long. Marouane Fellaini has been a bust in the midfield while the recent addition of Juan Mata has not paid off either. Robin Van Persie's reservations about Moyes could also lead to a departure this summer by the superstar striker.
