The MTV Video Music Awards, which is set to air from Los Angeles on September 6, will be a star-studded affair with big-name celebrities set to perform and present.

Former Disney-actress turned singer Demi Lovato will be headlining the event in a live pre-show an hour before the award ceremony, the network announced Tuesday. Lovato will be joined on stage by "Feel So Close" artist, Calvin Harris.

According to MTV, Lovato said, "I'm so excited to perform at the VMA preshow. I can't believe it!"

The winner of the new "Most Share-Worthy Video" award will be announced at the pre-show, MTV said. According to Mashable, people can vote for their favorite in this category using hashtags on Twitter.

Artists Carly Rae Jepson, One Direction, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé and Gotye are in the running for the new award. The hashtags #votebieber and #voteonedirection dominated the social media site on Tuesday, with the British band taking a slight lead over Bieber.

This is the second time MTV has used Twitter to count votes for awards, Mashable reported. The voting technique, which was first used in May, is just one way MTV will be using the Internet to attract viewers.

Mashable also reported that MTV will give audience members the chance to "GIF" any moment during the award show with a "GIF It" creator embedded into each video it posts online.

MTV's SVP of digital media, Colin Helms, told the site, "This is the vernacular of the audience, so we want to give them more tools to amplify this behavior. We don't want to make it hard for them."

The VMA, which will be hosted by comedian Kevin Hart, has confirmed a number of popular presenters including Miley Cyrus, the Wanted, Wiz Khalifa, Andy Samberg and the "Fierce Five," the gold medal winning U.S. Women's Olympics Gymnastics Team.

Musical performances at the award ceremony will include Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, and nominees One Direction, Rihanna and Frank Ocean. It will be the first VMA appearance for One Direction, who is also hosting their own VMA special on August 30, and rapper Frank Ocean.

Audience members can vote online in award categories including Best Pop Video, Best Rock Video, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Female Video, Best Male Video, Best Electronic Dance Music Video, Best Video with a Message and Video of the Year. Awards will also be given out in professional categories including Best Art Direction, Best Choreography, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Voting has opened and winners will be announced during the award ceremony on September 6, 2012 at 8 p.m. EST.
