Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York apartment.

According to Variety, authorities said they found Hoffman in his apartment in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. There was no cause determined but officials suspect it was overdose as they found a needle in his arm.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the actor was found in his bathroom around 11:15 a.m. by a screenwriter who called 911.

Hoffman was known for having issues with substance abuse. Variety stated that last year the actor completed a 10-day substance abuse program for heroin and the actor later revealed that he had been addicted to the drug when he was younger but had been clean for over 20 years.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers," Hoffman's family said in a statement.

The film had recently cast Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. He was also shooting "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1& 2" in Atlanta, Ga. He was reprising his role as Plutarch Heavensbee from the second installment.

Hoffman was known for his work in both theater and film. He was a four-time Oscar nominee who had won for his work in "Capote" and was nominated for "Charlie Wilson's War," "Doubt," and "The Master."

He was also nominated for the Tony Awards for his work on "True West" and "Long Day's Journey Into Night."

The actor made his directing debut in 2010 with "Jack Goes Boating." He also appeared in "The Big Lebowski," "Moneyball," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "Mission Impossible 3," "The Ides of March," "Pirate Radio," and "Magnolia."
