A few weeks away from the awaited premiere of "Camelia la Tejana", a telenovela based on the classic corrido "Contrabando y Traición" by Los Tigres del Norte, the director announced that the legendary Mexican band might star in a few episodes.

As reported on Tuesday, Jan. 28 by Notimex, quoted by website 20 Minutos, director Carlos Bolado said that Los Tigres del Norte might star in a few episodes for the telenovela starring actors Sara Maldonado and Érik Hayser.

"Camelia la Tejana", an exploration of the beginnings of drug trafficking in Mexico, exceptionally interpreted by the Mexican band in their song "Contrabando y Traición", tells the story of young Camelia, who is surrounded by problems with the law due to her relationship with Emilio Varela.

Carlos Bolado, the director in charge of Telemundo's new project recently said that although the story takes places in the mid 70s, the story is still relevant today since it tries to analyze the way how drug trafficking went from an "artisanal" craft to an industry, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal.

"Mexico's modern history is plagued by drug trafficking. It's something that has always been there and has something to do with the types of government we've had. Drug trafficking infiltrated those governments by force and with money. It's a show that talks about that, of how the decomposing began and how the ethic and honor codes of these groups changed," said the director in an interview quoted by the Mexican newspaper.

The director also said that the project wouldn't have been possible without the approval from Los Tigres del Norte, and their participation in some of the telenovela's scenes will be fundamental. The telenovela premieres in late February in the US.

"Los Tigres del Norte have been following the project closely, they created the character and without their approval this wouldn't be possible, they have been making it in the US," Bolado told Notimex, according to 20 Minutos.
