On Jan. 31 Jason Reitman's "Labor Day" will be released to mixed reviews.
The film, starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, tells the story of a depressed single mom, Adele, and her son, Henry, who offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search their town for an escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn the true story of this mysterious man and their options become increasingly limited.
The film was originally supposed to be released on Dec. 25. However, after having premiering to mixed reviews at the Toronto Film Festival, Paramount decided to release it in theaters on Dec. 27 for an Oscar qualifying run and later open it wide. The movie ultimately failed to score any awards traction and only garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Winslet for Best Actress.
The movie has been met with mixed reviews and currently has a 62 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Peter Debruge from Variety gave the movie a good review and wrote, "To the extent that Adele's hunger for affection resonates with audiences, what emerges is a powerful -- if implausible -- romance."
Todd McCarthy from the Hollywood Reporter also liked the film and wrote, "A nuanced, superbly acted love story with a most unusual genesis."
Meanwhile, Alonso Duralde from The Wrap disliked and movie and said, "If 'Labor Day' teaches us anything, it's that the line between a prestige-soaked year-end awards bait movie and a Lifetime original with a title like My Captor! My Lover! is blurry at best."
Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly was also negative and wrote, "I'm all for sincerity in filmmaking, but the quality that has defined Reitman's best movies - 'Up in the Air,' 'Juno,' and 'Thank You For Smoking' - is audacity, and he really needs to get that back."
Paramount will release the movie in in 2,500 theaters.
