With the Academy Awards nominations announced there were a number of surprises that pundits were not expecting.

"Alone Yet Not Alone" Gets Nominated

This was probably the biggest surprise of the morning. No pundit had this film on their predictions. The movie was not seen by anyone and yet it can be a favor to the Academy who paid attention to a small film. While it's unlikely to win, the film is something more people will pay attention to.

"American Hustle" Gets Four Acting Nods.

Last year, when "Silver Linings Playbook" was nominated for all four acting categories, David O. Russell made history. The movie was the first in 31 years to capture the categories. However, based off this year's Oscar nominations, it seems that all an actor has to do is work for Russell to get an Oscar nod. Christian Bale and Amy Adams were the winners in this case. Russell's films have a total of 11 acting nominations.

"The Missing Picture" Gets a Foreign Film Nomination

Cambodia's submission was a documentary film and the Academy has rarely chosen non-fiction film in this category. The result was unusual as it left Sony Pictures Classics' recent pickup "The Notebook" and Germany's "Two Lives" out of the race. It also marked the first nomination for Cambodia.

"Philomena" for Best Picture

When in doubt Harvey Weinstein will always get a Best Picture nomination. "Philomena" was never seen as a Best Picture contender but somehow managed to get into the race with just four nominations. The Weinstein Company was betting "August: Osage County" and "Lee Daniel's The Butler" were the company's biggest hits. However, neither got big nominations.

Jonah Hill Gets Second Nomination

Hill had missed every precursor award and it was widely thought that Daniel Bruhl was a sure thing for the Best Supporting Actor award for "Rush." However, Hill's comic timing and presence in a Best Picture nominee was more important to the Academy.
