How did they bag The Purple One for a TV show appearance?

In his entire 36-year (and counting) career, iconic rock star Prince has never guested in any TV show, except for interviews and live TV performances.

And also, that one time he guested on a Muppets Tonight episode was way back in 1997. Oh yes he did.

He was seen bantering with The Muppets with a Southern accent in a humorous skit. Later, he turned the plain-sounding menu of "pancakes, swordfish, eggs and coffee, maple syrup, and jam" into a distinctively Prince-y song, proving his songwriting prowess.

So this news of the notoriously private and selective artist acquiescing to a TV spot is the headline-making type.

Buzz about the music legend making his "first-ever appearance on a TV comedy," was leaked by E! News last month. He's since been confirmed to be a guest in New Girl's Super Bowl episode as himself.

Executive producer Brett Baer gave juicy details about the casting.

"He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan," he told E! News. "He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey [Deschanel] and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing."

Another executive producer, Dave Finkel, talked about Prince's role in the upcoming episode.

"He said, 'I want to be involved in the show in a real way and I want to help Nick and Jess with their relationship,'" Finkel revealed. Baer then sums up things by saying that the "genuinely funny" veteran performer will be "a Nick and Jess shipper."

"He's right in the middle of trying to help [Nick and Jess] work through some stuff and it's amazing," Baer continued. "His thing was all about getting to Jess and trying to bring out this inner part of her that hadn't been brought to the forefront. The word hip tips was sort of the thing. He put it, I think I can give her some hip tips!"

Wow! We'll be taking note of those "hip tips" come Super Bowl Sunday then!
