Hundreds of people were intoxicating after consuming synthetic marijuana in the United States, according to news agency Associated Press.

Colorado health authorities reported that in early 2013, the cases of people sent to hospitals due to drug consumption rose.

Although there have been no deaths, authorities said that around 221 people were intoxicated after smoking marijuana, something that hadn't been seen before, and there is a possibility they consumed a synthetic drug.

Some of the physical problems presented by those intoxicated were an elevated heart rate, disorientation, and agitation.

After all the victims said where they had bought the drugs they last consumed, authorities proceeded to shut down the stores as a security measure until investigations reveal the real motive for the intoxications.

The AP highlighted that in Colorado marijuana is legal; however, it pointed out that in the drug market there is a type of synthetic marijuana made with dried herbs mixed with a high degree of synthetic cannabinoids, such as ADB-PINACA and ABDICA.

Synthetic marijuana, also known as "spice", has been fought by American authorities since 2009, when it first showed up, but it has been difficult to eliminate due to the high amount of chemicals used.

Another consequence of legalizing marijuana in Colorado happened in November, in Denver, when it was reported that the number of cases of dogs being intoxicated by marijuana rose. Among the pets' symptoms were vomiting, bad coordination, shaking, and an accelerated heart rate.
