There is something old and something new in the White House Christmas decor recently unveiled by First Lady Michelle Obama. In past Christmases, a Portuguese water dog with a white chest and white front paws welcome guests to the display, but this time a new addition has been made. Aside from Bo the dog being on the spotlight, his little sister Sunny also gets her share of the limelight, Yahoo! reports.

This year's theme was entitled "Gather Around: Stories of the Season." It focuses on the stories behind holiday traditions celebrated by Americans both in the U.S. and throughout the world, noted the Denver Post.

The highlights of the Whiet House Christmas decor include two life sized replicas of the Portuguese water dogs (the executive dogs) made out of black satin ribbon. According to New York Daily News, the dogs would also be part of the annual gingerbread White House display, depicted in dark chocolate miniatures. Also part of the display is the Blue Room tree, which is a dedicated display for military families with photos of joyous homecomings after their tours of duty.

SFgate.com also noted that the First Lady and the children of military personnel helped decorate cookie ornaments and tissue paper flowers, as well as dried fruits to make wreaths.

In her remarks as she opened the annual display, Michelle Obama said, "During this holiday season, we gather with loved ones, I'd ask every American to remember what our military families and service members often experience during this time of year. Let us all remember the sacrifices they make to proudly serve us all," quoted the Huffington Post.

Yahoo! notes that an average of 70,000 visitors are expected to make their way to the White House for tours and holiday visits. The decors will include over two dozen Christmas trees.
