Is Italy a favorite to win the World Cup? Brazilian defender David Luiz thinks so.

Four years ago, the Azzurri failed to get out of the group stage in a group that included Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand. Many expected the defending champions to breeze through the group, but they were surprisingly dispatched by inferior squads in quick succession.

However, the team has improved under new coach Cesare Prandelli in recent years. The team went all the way to the final of the Euro 2012 before losing to Spain 4-0. In this year's Confederations Cup, the Italians gave Spain all they could handle in the semifinals before losing in the shootout; the team then managed to finish third and breezed through World Cup qualifications.

"They have a fantastic team," said Luiz told Italy's Corriere dello Sport. "They have the right mentality for these tournaments because they have players who know how to deal with pressure.

"Italy are one of the favourites for the World Cup, and it's no coincidence they already have four stars on their chests," he added. "When you are up against the Azzurri, you're never favourites. They're going to be great opponents and must be respected."

The Italians will rely on the play of Andrea Pirlo who is on his last legs but continues to shine for his club Juventus. The midfield maestro was key to the team's performances at the Euro and Confederations Cup and will continue to guide the squad. However, the instrumental player may be Mario Balotelli. The controversial striker is among the best in the world when he is healthy and focused.

"If he puts the right chip in his head, he could be one of the best strikers in the world," Luiz said about Balotelli. "With the ball at his feet, he's one of the strongest, technically and physically."
