Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave" has been nominated for seven Independent Spirit awards, leading the organization's nominations.

The film was nominated for Best Feature; Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for Best Actor; Michael Fassbender received a Best Supporting Actor nod; Lupit Nyong'o was nominated for Best Supporting Actress; and McQueen was nominated for Best Director, according to the Film Independent. John Ridley's Screenplay and Sean Bobbit's Cinematography were also nominated. 

Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" was also nominated for Best Feature as well as for Best Actor for Bruce Dern, Best Supporting Actor for Will Forte, and Best Supporting Actress for June Squibb.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" was also nominated for Best Feature as well as Best Actor for Oscar Issac, and Best Cinematography for Bruno Delbonnel.

"All is Lost" and "Frances Ha" rounded out the nominees for Best Feature. Other major nominees included "Blue Jasmine," which was nominated for Best Actress (Cate Blanchett); "Fruitvale Station," which was nominated for Best First Feature, and Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan); as well as "Short Term 12," which was nominated Best Actress (Brie Larson), and Bet Supporting Actor (Keith Stanfield).

Oscar contenders nominated included Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for "Dallas Buyers Club," James Gandolfini for "Enough Said" and Julie Delpy for "Before Midnight."

Some of the surprises included Shane Carruth ("Upstream Color") and Jeff Nichols ("Mud") for Best Director and Gaby Hoffman ("Crystal Fairy") and Shailene Woodley ("The Spectacular Now") who were both nominated for Best Actress.

A number of films were also snubbed including "The Place Beyond the Pines," "What Maisie Knew," "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," "The Way Way Back," "Kill Your Darlings" and "The Bling Ring"  

The Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out on the afternoon of March 1, the day before the Oscars, in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. Patton Oswalt will host.
