In Minneapolis, five children and their stepmother fell into a frozen lake as they drove on the highway.

The Associated Press shared that on Thursday, November 21, a car fell into a lake after it drove off the highway near Minneapolis, leaving the driver and her five children trapped.

23-year-old Marion Guerrido, the children's stepmother, was driving the car. After falling into the water, she managed to get out and got on the roof of the car to ask for help from nearby people.

"The car was underwater and she must have been standing on top of it. The water reached her knees", said Jeff Robertson, a resident of Minneapolis.

Some of the people passing by tried to rescue the children trapped in Marion's car, but it was impossible as the water was freezing and they could not breathe.

AP points out that police and rescue teams arrived 20 minutes later and began to rescue the five children aged between 1 and 7 years, but the last of them spent 45 minutes underwater, and died.

Rescue teams revealed that 5-year-old Zenavia C. Rennie was already dead when rescue teams broke the windows of the sunken car to pull the child out.

Eric Roeske, patrol officer, said that he's still investigating the causes of the accident, but that the highway didn't have a retaining wall for cars, which might have led to Marion's car to land in the lake.

The driver was tested to see if she drove under the influence of alcohol, but she came up clean, and now the accident is being analyzed to see if it was caused by her driving at excessive speed.
