When it comes the Europe, Google's smartphone operating system takes the crown as the most-utilized mobile platform.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, Google's Android was one of two smartphone operating systems to increase its market share during the three-month period ending in September 2013 in the EU5, which accounts for the cooperation of France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Counting those countries as one unit, Google Android finished September this year with 71.9 percent of the smartphone operating system market share. For Android, it was an increase of 4.2 percentage points compared to the 67.7 percent market share during the three-month period ending in September 2012.

The other smartphone operating system to see an increase in its market share was Microsoft's Windows Phone. For Microsoft, the Windows Phone platform increased by 5.2 percentage points between the three months ending in September last year and the same period in 2013. Windows Phone finished the latest three-month period with 9.8 percent of the market share in the EU5, which is up from the 4.6 percent last year.

The increase for Windows Phone lifted the Microsoft smartphone platform from fourth to third place.

Apple's iOS managed to finish at second place despite losing a couple percentage points in the market share. For iOS, the Apple smartphone operating system dipped by 2.3 percentage points. iOS maintained second place but with 14.6 percent, down from the 16.8 percent last year.

BlackBerry encountered the worst decline in the market share based on the figures provided by Kantar Worldpanel for the three months ending in September this year. BlackBerry fell by 3.1 percentage points. BlackBerry ended September 2013 with 2.3 percent, down from the 5.4 percent last year. BlackBerry finished at fourth place.
