Owners of the Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi-only tablet can now go ahead and snag the shiniest new version of Android on the market, Android 4.4 KitKat.
Google announced on Google Plus Wednesday morning that it was releasing KitKat for the Nexus 7. The upgrade is only available for the Wi-Fi version of the tablet, although Google did mention it applies to both 2012 and 2013 variants and that the cellular Nexus 7 will get KitKat soon.
According to various reports, however, the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade isn't available for download over the air yet. Luckily, there is still a way to grab it by connecting the tablet to a computer via a USB cable for those too impatient to wait any longer. The process is a bit complicated, but for those up to the task, the folks over at GottaBeMobile have put together a great guide for the 2013 model.
For those who would rather not risk damaging their Nexus 7 tablet, don't worry, the official roll out shouldn't be too far away. Don't be surprised, however, if your specific tablet doesn't get it immediately — Android updates are pushed out in batches, meaning some will get it before others. Still, all Nexus 7s should be running KitKat by the end of November.
Android 4.4 KitKat brings a new look to the Android interface by cleaning it up and giving it more color and space. Along with the usual performance and security improvements, Google has integrated Google Now into more functions than ever, in hopes of getting the device to display relevant information before it is even asked.
