The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to fill in the gap on their offensive shortstop rotation and reports suggested that the defending NL champions are interested in trading for Troy Tulowitzki, who is arguably the best shortstop in Major League Baseball.

Jeff Passan reported that sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports that top officials of the Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies will engage in talks about a possible deal at the GM/Owners' meeting in Orlando.

"Officials from the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies are expected to meet at the GM/owners' meetings in Orlando this week and discuss parameters of a potential trade involving Troy Tulowitzki, which already has been broached in informal talks between the parties, sources with knowledge of the situation told Yahoo Sports," Passan reported.

Top officials of the Rockies previously denied reports that they are open to trading Tulowitzki, but their stance could change after weighing the advantages of trading him, which could save them at least $134 million -- which is Tulowitzki's projected salary in the final seven years of his contract.

Aside from the financial advantages of trading Tulowitzki, the Rockies could also get attractive pieces in return like Matt Adams, who could be the Rockies' long-time replacement for Todd Helton. If they eventually decide to pull the plug on the trade, the Rockies are also expected to demand at least one young starter from the Cardinals.

"The Rockies would like to add at least one young starter to a pair of promising right-handed prospects: Jonathan Gray, the No. 3 overall pick in last year's draft, and Eddie Butler, who blew away scouts at the Futures Game with a power sinker that topped out at 98 mph," Passan added.

Meanwhile, clubs that are seeking to upgrade their pitcher rotation are also expected to arrange talks with the Tampa Bay Rays, who are reportedly considering trading David Price.

The Rays are expected to look for the best offers on the table, but Buster Olney of ESPN said that other teams want to make sure that Price would agree to a long-term deal before agreeing to a potential blockbuster trade.
