'Narco-Submarine' With Capacity to Carry 8 Tons of Cocaine Found in Colombia

A submersible vessel with the capacity to transport many tons of cocaine was located by Colombian authorities last weekend according to local media.

The government of Colombia has not released any further details at the moment, however, news website RT said that police units located the submarine on Nov. 2 about 600 kilometers from Bogotá. According to the same source, during the operation, the vessel was empty and no arrests were made.

The submarine, which is 12 meters long and 3.5 meters wide, is equipped with a radar, an electric generator and even an air-conditioning unit. The captured vessel has a capacity to transport eight tons of cocaine and can carry a crew of six, according to Colombian authorities.

First reports suggest that the vessel had been under custody of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This is not the first time a submarine allegedly used for drug trafficking has been found by Colombian authorities.

In 2011, a vessel with a similar capacity and a navigational autonomy from Colombia to Mexico was found in the rural area of Timbiquí, in the southwestern coast of Colombia in the Pacific, reported CNN.

According to the report, before that discovery, vessels related to drug trafficking located by the Colombian Navy had been semi-submersible, and were easily identified as they traveled on the surface.

The vessel confiscated on Saturday is a submarine with the same characteristics of the one found in 2011, both have an approximate cost of $2.12 million.
