The competition between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. is set to heat up following an executive's comment regarding the company's tablets.

According to the Associated Press, Samsung executive Shin Jong-kyun said the South Korean-based company's tablet business is growing and will become the biggest tablet manufacturer in the world.

The executive's comments come as Samsung toppled Apple in the smartphone market.

Although he didn't specify a timeframe for when Samsung would dethrone Apple in the tablet market, Jong-kyun added Samsung's tablets will pass 40 million units during 2013, which is double from 2012's figures.

"Samsung tablet shipments started to grow remarkably since the second half of last year," the Samsung executive said.

Based on the International Data Corporation's (IDC) figures, Samsung sold 16.6 million units in 2012, which is significantly less than Apple's 65.7 million iPads.

Jong-kyen's comments were made during an annual Samsung event for analysts and investors.

As Latinos Post reported, 47.6 million tablets were shipped worldwide during the third quarter of 2013.

Of the third quarter figures by the IDC, Apple shipped 14.1 million units shipped, or 29.6 percent of the tablet market share, although it is a drop from 40.2 percent the same period in 2012.

Samsung, however, shipped 9.7 million units during the latest third quarter, which is up from the 4.3 million units shipped during the same quarter last year.

Does Samsung have what it takes to bite into Apple's tablet dominance?
