Nokia officially entered the tablet market with the Lumia 2520, however, it might serve competition with fellow Microsoft Windows RT-based tablet, Surface 2.

The Microsoft Surface 2 tablet officially launched on Oct. 22, while Nokia announced the Lumia 2520 on the same day during a Nokia World presentation in Abu Dhabi.

The tablets have their similarities, but the small differences might matter to the consumer.

When it comes to the display, the Surface 2 sports a 10.6-inch screen with 1,920x1,080 resolution at 208 pixels per inch (ppi). The Lumia 2520 has a screen size of 10.1 inches with the same resolution but at 218ppi.

The memory specifications for the tablets differ. The Lumia 2520 is available in a 32GB internal storage model with 2GB of RAM. The Surface 2 offers 32GB and 64GB internal storage models with 2GB of RAM. A microSD card slot is available on both tablets. The Lumia 2520's microSD card slot can take an additional 32GB of memory while the Surface 2 is able to take 64GB more storage.

The wireless connectivity options on the Surface 2 and Lumia 2520 are similar. The two tablets are able to connect to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth version 4.0, and USB version 3.0. An advantage for the Lumia 2520 is it comes equipped with NFC.

The camera specifications are better on the Lumia 2520. The Nokia-based tablet sports a rear-facing camera with 6.7 megapixels at 3,088x1,744 pixels and a front-facing camera with 2 megapixels. The Surface 2's rear-facing camera has 5 megapixels with 2,592x1,936 pixels while the front-facing camera is improved with 3.5 megapixels.

The video-recording capabilities are about the same but ultimately the Surface 2 has an advantage. The Surface 2 and Lumia 2520's rear-facing cameras can both record at 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps). The Lumia 2520's front-facing camera can record 720p while the Surface 2 has 1080p, both maintaining the 30fps.

The Surface 2 utilizes the Microsoft Surface 8.1 RT operating system while the Lumia 2520 sports the Microsoft Windows RT platform.

The Surface 2 is equipped with the Nvidia Tegra 4 T40 quad-core 1.7GHz Cortex-A15 processor while the Lumia 2520 has the Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz Krait 400.

The Lumia 2520 has an expected shipment date in the fourth quarter of 2013 for $499. The release of the Lumia 2520 will have an initial rollout in the U.S., U.K., and Finland.

As seen on the online Microsoft Store, the Surface 2's 32GB model is priced at $449 while the 64GB has a price tag of $549. The tablet launched on Oct. 22 across Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States. China, meanwhile, will get to see the tablets by early November.
