Those expecting the Google Nexus 5 smartphone and Android 4.4 KitKat operating system to rear their headsOct. 24 will be disappointed to know that the two will not be making an appearance at the scheduled Google Play event being held in New York City. Instead, their release dates continue to be as elusive as the actual phone and features of KitKat.

Google had sent out invites for a Google Play event in New York City Oct. 24, and while many hoped that it would be the time and place the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat would be announced, Google quickly shot down the speculation.

"The October 24 event will not be a launch of a device or hardware, rather a mixer for consumer press to better acquaint themselves with Google Play," a Google representative told Electronista.

The representative then added, "There will be no news [or] launch at this event."

There you have it folks. Despite the month of November quickly approaching, Google has yet to divulge any information on the Nexus 5 smartphone. Initial rumors had the launch date pegged at around Oct. 22, but as that date has come and gone, it's clear Google has other plans. An accessory sighting indicates that the Nexus 5 could be out before Oct. 31. Either way, with no official comment from Google, it's hard to pin down anything until the Mountain View search giant throws the press and public a bone.

One thing is for sure: Google will want to have the new Nexus 5 handset and Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out in time for the busy fall holiday shopping season that begins around Black Friday.

Google is also rumored to have an LTE model of last year's Nexus 4 smartphone in the works.
