Apple announced the second-generation 7.9-inch iPad mini tablet, but its specifications are not too different from the original tablet.

The iPad mini 2, also known as the iPad mini with Retina Display, as the name showed, is the first 7.9-inch Apple tablet with Retina Display. The original iPad mini s screen has 1,024x768 pixels at 162 pixels per inch (ppi). The second-generation iPad mini sports 2,048x1,536 pixels at 324ppi.

When it comes to memory, the two iPad mini tablets are offered in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models. The iPad mini 2, however, is also available in a 128GB model. The new 7.9-inch tablet also has 1GB of RAM while the original has 512MB of RAM.

The wireless connectivity for the two tablets is the same at Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and USB 2.0.

The camera specifications for the iPad mini and iPad mini are also equal. The rear-facing cameras on the tablets are at 5 megapixels with 2,592x1,944 pixels and 1.2 megapixels for the front-facing camera. The tablets' front-facing camera can record at 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps) while the front-facing camera sports 720p at 30fps.

The mobile operating system for the iPad mini 2 is the new iOS 7 platform, which launched on Sept. 18 this year. The original iPad mini has the iOS 6 mobile platform but is upgradeable to iOS 7.

The iPad mini came equipped with the A5 processor by Apple, however, the Cupertino-based organization crushed speculation and gave the new iPad mini the same A7 processor seen on the iPhone 5s instead of the A6 on the iPad 4.

The iPad mini is available in black and white while the second-generation tablet is offered in "space gray" and silver.

On Apple's official website, the original iPad mini will only be available in its 16GB model for $299 or 429 if the consumer wants the tablet with cellular data. The iPad mini 2's 16GB model is priced at $399, $499 for the 32GB, $599 for the 64GB, and $699 for the 128GB model. With cellular data, the 16GB model cost $529, $629 for the 32GB, $729 for the 64GB, and $829 for the 128GB model.

In terms of a release date, Apple did not specify. Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller stated the new 7.9-inch tablet will launch later in November, which is a contrast to the iPad Air, which will debut on Nov. 1.
